Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico – July 2026. What began as a dream shared by a group of women who believed in the power of women's sportfishing became reality this weekend with the launch of a new tradition for Cabo San Lucas and the world-renowned destination of Los Cabos.
The inaugural Cabo
Queens Los Cabos Fishing Tournament, developed under the guidance of Clicerio Mercado and Gonzalo Alamea,
members of the tournament's Founding Council, exceeded every expectation and
immediately established itself as one of the most significant milestones in
women's sportfishing in Mexico.
Just days before the
event, organizers proudly announced that 35 boats had registered for the
tournament's second official press conference. By Friday morning, that number
had grown to 41 teams. Registration continued throughout the day at Luxury
Avenue, where the tournament ultimately closed with an impressive 55
registered boats and 220 female anglers, demonstrating the extraordinary
response from the sportfishing community.
The official
festivities began Friday afternoon at Luxury Avenue, where sponsors welcomed
participants with gifts, refreshments, and interactive experiences.
Registration quickly became much more than a check-in process—it became the
first opportunity for anglers from different cities, states, and countries to
meet, reconnect, and celebrate a shared passion for sportfishing.
From the very
beginning, it was evident that Cabo Queens had succeeded in bringing together a
community united by something greater than competition: the desire to become
part of a historic first edition.
Early Saturday
morning, the tournament's official Shotgun Start took place aboard the
spectacular Sunrider, where more than 100 community leaders and
distinguished guests from Los Cabos gathered to witness the beginning of
what is expected to become one of the destination's signature sporting events.
Business leaders,
government officials, tourism representatives, sponsors, media members, and
invited guests came together to celebrate the birth of a tournament created not
only to recognize women in sportfishing, but also to inspire future generations
of female anglers.
At sunrise, the fleet
departed from the Cabo San Lucas Marina into the Gulf of California (Sea of
Cortez) and the Pacific Ocean—a privilege unique to Los Cabos, located at
the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula, where two legendary
fishing grounds meet.
Against this
extraordinary backdrop, competitors enjoyed a full day of sportfishing defined
by camaraderie, sportsmanship, and mutual respect.
Beyond the tournament
standings, Cabo Queens demonstrated that women's sportfishing is thriving
through determination, professionalism, and passion. Every catch, every return
to the marina, and every story shared during the official weigh-in reflected
the true purpose behind the event: to expand opportunities for women in
sportfishing while showcasing Los Cabos as one of the world's premier fishing
destinations.
The excitement
continued throughout the official weigh-in, where family members,
friends, sponsors, and spectators gathered to welcome the returning teams and
witness the day's catches.
As each fish reached
the scales, anticipation grew among participants and guests, creating an
atmosphere that celebrated not only competition but also friendship, teamwork,
and the shared excitement that defines the sportfishing community.
The tournament
concluded with an awards ceremony held at Golden Zone La Marina, where
organizers recognized the outstanding performances of the winning teams while
honoring the dedication, sportsmanship, and commitment demonstrated by every
participant throughout the inaugural event.
Special recognition
was also given to the tournament's sponsors, government institutions, media
partners, captains, mates, volunteers, and collaborators whose collective
efforts made the first edition of Cabo Queens possible.
More Than MXN $836,000 Awarded
The inaugural Cabo
Queens Los Cabos Fishing Tournament featured a guaranteed purse of MXN
$250,000. Thanks to the enthusiastic participation in the tournament's
optional jackpot categories, an additional MXN $586,000 was added to the
prize fund.
In total, the
inaugural edition awarded an impressive: MXN $836,000 Total Prize Purse
This remarkable prize
purse reflects the confidence participants placed in the tournament, the highly
competitive level achieved during its very first edition, and the tremendous
potential of Cabo Queens to become one of Mexico's premier women's sportfishing
tournaments.
The strong participation
in the jackpot categories is also an important indicator of the tournament's
economic activity, highlighting the enthusiasm and commitment of all 55
registered teams.
Beyond the monetary
awards, Cabo Queens celebrated something even more meaningful: the birth of a
community built on friendship, respect, leadership, and a shared passion for
the ocean.
For many participants,
this weekend was far more than a fishing tournament—it became an unforgettable
experience that forged lasting friendships and inspired a new generation of
women to discover sportfishing.

As part of the closing
ceremony, the Organizing Committee officially announced that the second
edition of Cabo Queens will take place on July 2–3, 2027,
reaffirming its commitment to establishing the tournament as an annual
tradition in women's sportfishing.
The overwhelming
response from participants, the support of the local community, the enthusiasm
of sponsors and the presence of more than one hundred business leaders, public
officials and community representatives at the official Shotgun Start confirmed
that Cabo Queens was built on a solid foundation with a long-term vision.
One of Cabo Queens'
defining pillars is its commitment to making a positive impact beyond the
tournament itself. From its very first edition, the event was created with the
conviction that sportfishing can also serve as a platform for giving back to
the community.
This inaugural
tournament proudly supports the work of three nonprofit organizations in Baja
California Sur: El Carril Rosa, Club de Niños y Niñas de Baja California Sur y Onco
Loreto. Through these partnerships, Cabo Queens reaffirms that its mission
extends far beyond competition. It is about building a community where sport,
tourism, and social responsibility move forward together.
The inaugural edition
did more than crown champions.
It brought a community
together, strengthened a destination, and proved that great traditions begin
when a shared vision inspires hundreds of people to believe in something bigger
than themselves.
It also demonstrated
that Cabo San Lucas continues to write new chapters in the history of
world-class sportfishing, while the destination of Los Cabos continues
to strengthen its international reputation through innovative initiatives that
promote sport, tourism, and women's leadership.
Every great
tradition begins with a single chapter.
Cabo Queens has
just written its first.
